All About My Mother - 1999

Pedro Almodovar is the most famous Spanish director who particularly mentions about the stories of endpoint, extraordinary plots and incendiary characters (I will give information about him later). He exists on the line which is located out of the traditional culture and this makes his films unique. No doubt, the most fantastic movie of Almodovar is "All About My Mother". Who is in this movie? Manuela (a nurse and a perfect mother) builds up an existence and a regular life for herself and for her son (but his son would die because of a car accident soon). This car accident is the most indigestible stage of the movie since it is started by the statements of Esteban (son) and it makes us to think that it will continue with Esteban's statements until the end. the first surprise is his death and it makes the film as in the real life. After his son's death, Manuela decides to go to Bercelona (really a colourful city) and establishes a new life with a sister who is pregnant, a prostitute and two problematic actresses. I really like this film because Almodovar chooses to tell us the realities and other face of the real life that we always ignore in his frame. If we look from the emotional hand, we can observe a deeply dramatic story. On the other hand, the extraordinary characters and their lives that shoch people remind the viewer how plain they perceive the life.

 

Yes, it is tha women dominant movie which is very rare in the screen (What does Hollywood say? Please, love stories are the best!!!). The viewer might get astonished how Almodovar depicts the hard topics of cinema world like "being a mother", "being a woman" and "being unable to a woman" out of different characters. The common point of these women is being a prisoner of their passion even they have different lives and aspects. No matter what their direction is, they can not escape from their past, relationships and addictions. Probably, by the reason of Almodovar is homosexual himself, he express the perspective of women, subculture and atmosphere of backstreets that we always ignore. In my opinion, Almodovar wants to say "human exists with their characters and these characters are shaped by families, education, tradition and habits and these characters direct the life of human!".
