Lamerica is the movie of an Italian director, Gianni Amelio that was released in 1994. It mentions Albania that was unaware of the rest of the world, living in poverty at the heart of the European Civilization. First, the communist regime was collapsed and borders has been open for visitors, by the time, two Italians entered into the country for so called enterprise. By the arrogance of being Italian, they thought they can handle anything by money and by prestige of their Italian passports but things took a worng turn. They had the same destiny with the old man, Spiro, who was planned for chairman for their fictitious factory.
So, ask me please, how does Lamerica relate to the movie? In the second world war, Italians migrated to America by ships to escape from fascist pressure and suffers of the war. Therefore, the escape of the young enterpreneur, Gino, (from Albania to Italy) was associated with this tragic past. Gino had lost his money, passport and self confidence and he had begun to understand the Albanians and their suffer (Italians who were arrogant to Albanians were migrating to America during the second world war for same reasons of Albanians ). For Italians, release was America and for others, it was Italy. It is a movie to make empathy and understand the real suffers of a nation.
The response of an Albanian police officer (when Gino asserts they will enliven the Albanian dead economy) was a good catchword: "...even if the Albanian economy is dead, in a civilised country, the dead is not left to the dogs in the streets."
